Best of The Safari

It’s been about six weeks since our safari in Kenya and I cannot stop thinking about it. Was it a dream? In some ways it feels like it might have been, because it was so incredible.

Our 10-day trip in 90 seconds

Top Highlights

  • Living out Brice’s dream of having a picnic breakfast while watching hippos play in the water
  • Watching the sunrise over the Masai Mara while floating in a hot air balloon
  • Enjoying a perfect sundowner right in the plains of the Mara, complete with a hyena chasing down a wildebeest right in front of us, a beautiful sunset, good food, and great laughs with David, Josphat our server and the chef from Mara Intrepids.
  • Seeing all the baby animals!!!! Green season is the best. We saw baby rhinos, zebra, wildebeest, hippos, giraffes, elephants, even the tiniest gazelle born moments before we saw it.
  • Spotting all the Big 5 (lion, rhino, elephant, buffalo and leopard)

  • Watching how excited David, our guide, was when we spotted the leopard after a day of searching for one
  • Getting so up close and personal with a massive male lion, you could almost scratch his ears
  • Having a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner at Mbweha Cottages in Lake Nakuru where we had the camp literally to ourselves (again, thank you Green Season!)
  • Seeing a pride of 13 lions sleeping so hard they didn’t even notice or care that we were there
  • Catching a cheetah stroll along the plains

  • Spotting a big male elephant by the watering hole at Satao Elerai Camp, who we named Bao after the rock game we were learning to play. Brice also later went for a walk with Bao, much to the dismay of David.
  • Giggling every time a warthog would run past with its tail sticking straight up like an antenna
  • Getting kissed by a giraffe at Nairobi’s Giraffe Centre
  • Meeting the tiniest baby rhino, viewing the baby elephants excitedly eat lunch at the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage and adopting Enkesha
  • Watching massive elephant families (50+!) live their best lives in Amboseli
  • Blessing the rains over Mount Kilimanjaro (and obviously playing lots of Toto)

Sure, there were some moments of way too many bugs and a few too many early mornings, but man, it was a magical 10 days.
